In the sixteenth century, William Shakespeare composed Hamlet, the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark. In the play, Hamlet is seen as the villain by the other characters, but the question still lingers, what drove him to his madness? Claudius, Gertrude and Ophelia are the mere reason behind his madness, the betrayal and loss of connection to someone he dearly loved is what causes him to lose himself. Especially, after the pivotal moment, when the ghost is revealed as his father, who was tragically murdered.

Polonius believes that Ophelia will only be hurt by Hamlet; “For Lord Hamlet, Believe so much in him that he is young, with a larger may be walk Than may be given you. In few, Ophelia, Do not believe his vows, for they are brokers” (1.3.132-136). Polonius defies the relationship between Ophelia and Hamlet due to the fact, Hamlet is a young royal man. Thus, causing the rejection between Ophelia and Hamlet to amplify his madness. His complete insanity does not start until he discovers Ophelia is dead; sending him to kill many and to his own death. Hamlet’s true feelings are reveal ironically in Ophelia’s death bed, “I loved Ophelia. Forthy thousand brothers could not with all the quantity of love Make up my sum. What wilt thou do for her?”(5.1.254-319) Ophelia is the only last reminding thing that was constant in his life and someone he had a deep connection with, due to this incident, Hamlet is forever mad. During his encounters with Ophelia, He solely ignores her to not show his shattered heart so Hamlet communicates with a bad manner towards Ophelia.
