Texas had recently earned its freedom from Mexico and the Southerners wanted it. After being argued about in the election of 1844, James K. Polk pushed and pushed to get Texas until it was finally added to America. In 1845 Texas was officially added to the United States as a slave state. After the addition of Texas, many Southerners also wanted to gain the other land in the south, such as California and New Mexico. The attempt to get this land, eventually started a war with Mexico. The Americans had won and the war had just ended. In 1848, Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed after the war with Mexico, giving up land such as present day California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and parts of Colorado. Then, in 1854, America gained what was left of Arizona and New Mexico, by buying it from Mexico in the Gasden Purchase. With all of this new land, huge debates began on how to keep the balance of slave a Free states. Before the new land was added to the U.S. the Missouri Compromise was what decided whether state became a slave or free state. The Missouri Compromise set up a line at a certain latitude that divided Free states from slave states. Besides the exception of Missouri, all states above the 36’ 30 N are Free states and all south of the line have slavery. This compromise was suggested by Henry Clay to keep the balance of slavery in the Louisiana Purchase.
