Not only has America never identified itself by its religious identity, but America has never acted to be a Christian nation. When we turn back to our founding fathers none of them were in favor of having a state supported church and there was no support to make America into a non-secular nation. The documents founding America were written in deistic terms with no references to Christianity. It was made clear in our first amendments rights that “congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” and although some argue that documents, such as the Constitution, are insinuating that America was founded as a Christian nation there is no mention of God or even religious denomination. The Constitution is an entirely secular document and if the end goal was for the nation to become Christian it would not allow religious freedom. The founding fathers also supported creating a non-secular government as they were aware of the dangers of the alliance of church and state. The government has remained neutral and outlawed religious tests in offices and taxes that went to churches or other endorsements of religion. Not only that but the government has also made other changes and accommodations to ensure religious freedom as new religious practices come about.
