From one of her childhood accounts she spoke on being a servant “Had to clean up, and set the table, tote in the eating.” Like Phobe ,Harriet Smith another former slave from Texas. She said in a 1941 recording that she was not allowed to go school or learn to read or write.Only being taught what her owners wanted her to learn and that was to be a servant and to obey them. Because slaves were seen as property they were only allowed to do what there owners wanted them to. In which their owners could do anything to them that they wanted.Some were taken from their families others were sexually abused. Harriet heard stories of other slaves being mistreated but claimed her owners treated her well.
