The start of Grant being involved into the society is because what happened to a young African-American man named Jefferson, he was accused of first degree murder and guilty of robbery. Jefferson was sentenced to death by electrocution, but they had sentenced a “hog” to death. They referred to Jefferson as a hog because of the poor education he had received and lack of intelligence. Mostly everyone in the town was very religious, Grant was too at a point in his life, after Grant came back from college he saw no point in going to church that cause a split in the little family he had. He lost his faith and only believed God makes people care, kid plays, folks sing, brings loved ones together and makes food grow out the ground.
