Addiction can be described as being attained to a substance, thing, or habit with a strong desire. Addiction is important because many people think of addiction as a harmful thing. Many bad addictions include alcohol, drugs, overdose of prescriptions, and gambling. Addiction does not always have to be harmful; it can also be something good for someone. Good addictions that are portrayed everyday include exercising, listening to music, eating healthy food, drinking water, reading, and even learning. Addiction can be a person doing something, a particular substance that you want, or a habit. In that case, addiction could be harmful to someone or great for someone, but addiction has many factors of what causes them.
What is the real meaning of the word addiction? Addiction can have many different meanings, and can be defined by many different people and sources. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, addiction can be defined as a strong and harmful need to regularly have something such as a drug, or do something such as going to a casino and gambling. According to the ASAM or American Society of Addiction Medicine, it is “A primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations.
