During this time he advocated the modernization of the economy through railroads, banks, and tariffs. Lincoln partnered with a congressman by the name of Joshua R. Giddings and wrote a bill to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia. Lincoln then got rid of the bill because of the failure. Lincoln was very against the Mexican-American War but supported the Wilmot Proviso which was an American law to ban slavery in any place taken from Mexico in the Mexican American War. Abraham Lincoln guided the United States through the Civil War, one of the most bloody wars in history. Lincoln also persevered the Union, strengthened the federal government, put an end to slavery and even modernized the economy. He felt that the Civil war had a philosophical objective and that was a new birth of freedom in the nation. Lincoln soon contributed $2 million for war material from the Treasury with no confirmation from Congress, asked for 75,000 soldiers into military service, and even arrested or prosecuted suspected confederate sympathizers. Around this time he was having disputes with his generals, cabinets and more. As the US was behind in the war there Lincoln felt like there was no hope for keeping the morale alive and reunifying the nation. He had one option in mind to reunite the US and that was the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation was to abolish slavery in the south and let the slaves be free. This changed almost more than 3 million federal legal statuses across the US! Very slowly the war started to improve for the US but elections were coming up
