Dialectical Journals: A Walk in the Woods
Quote #1: “Not long after I moved with my family to a small town in New Hampshire I happened upon a path that vanished into a wood on the edge of the town.” (Bryson 3)
Response:
This quote is the very first sentence in the book. It catches the readers’ attention and compels them to continue reading. The quote establishes a first-person point of view that continues throughout the entirety of A Walk in the Woods. First-person narrative is when a character in the story is narrating. The initiating event is something that sets the rising action into motion; one might argue that this sentence displays the initiating event, as Bryson’s noticing of the path (which is revealed to be a part of the Appalachian Trail) plants the idea of hiking the trail. It also

The date was March 9, 1996. We were on our way.” (Bryson 49)
Response:
Bryson and his hiking companion, Stephen Katz, begin their journey about ¬¬¬-halfway through chapter three, illustrated by this quote. It depicts the setting: March 9, 1996, on the Appalachian Trail (setting includes both the time and place at which the story takes place). The setting of a story establishes the feeling the story will inspire, and, more importantly, it orients the reader in the story and allows them to follow along more easily. The last sentence of this quote displays an element of positivity, showing a slight character development from the beginning of the book.
Quote #3: “My own feeling was that for the first time I really wanted to keep going. The sun was shining. I was clean and refreshed. There was ample food in our packs. I had spoken to my wife by phone and knew that all was well. Above all, I was starting to feel fit. I was sure I had lost nearly ten pounds already. I was ready to go.” (Bryson 79-80)

Assuming Solomon Northup knew that the main audience would be northern white readers, I believe that his collaboration with editor David Wilson was a measure taken to ensure that the believability of his story could be bolstered by the aid of a white man’s insurance. Wilson offers preliminary notes for the reader, affirming that he accurately took down Northup’s dictations and pointing out that Northup’s story can be corroborated by public evidence. Wilson also offers his own endorsement of Northup and states his belief that the former slave “has adhered strictly to the truth.” As a precursor to what will follow, Wilson briefly identifies the setting of Northup’s tale in the “Pine Woods” and “Bayou Boeuf.…

I imagine James Still in his little shack with his typewriter and a big burden on his heart. Now, I’m sure he had more than one burden, but I can’t help but notice all the descriptions of the physical beauty of Appalachia. So, I think one of those burdens must have been planting a love for his home in the heart of his readers. He did this through the perspective of a tenderhearted seven year old boy and his five year old little brother. In this analysis I will compare the two boys’ perspectives of Appalachian nature and how it affected their lives.…

Cold Mountain . . . soared in his mind as a place where all his scattered forces might gather… He no longer thought of that world as heaven, nor did he still think that we get to go there when we die. Those teachings had been burned away. But he could not abide by a universe composed only of what he could see, especially when it was so frequently foul.”…

I believe there is meaning behind the quote, “A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say” by Italo Calvino. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams in my opinion is what Italo Calvino defines as classic. This book has taught me many great life lessons that apply to my everyday life. To anyone who has skimmed through the book Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, it appears to be just a zany science-fiction novel about the misadventures of Arthur Dent.…

Martin Luther King Jr once said “Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.” This famous quote has a lot of significance in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a book written through the perspective of a child showing her view of the social injustices happening in her small town. When people are denied rights in their normal, everyday life, they are going to be denied equal rights everywhere else, even in court. Atticus, Tom Robinson’s lawyer’s, quote, “our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal,” is proven wrong when an innocent black man is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit, just because of the color of his skin. Through her use of the dark irony of the trial and Jem’s view of Tom Robinson, Harper Lee shows that justice is something that not all people have, no matter the circumstances.…

In the short story, the princess chose the tiger over the lady due to her barbarism and jealousy. First of all, the princess was said to be just as semi-barbaric as her father. The evidence is shown in the quote, “This semi-barbaric king had a daughter… with a soul as fervent and imperious as his own.” (Frank R. Stockton 3). Her nature was just like her father’s who came up with the obviously fair justice administration, where watching a tiger kill a human is entertaining.…
