A Streetcar Named Desire
The story setting is in New Orleans around the late 40’s early 50’s. The story was written by Tennessee Williams. Tennessee Williams is an American playwright and actor. He is one of the 3 most famous playwrights of the 20th century American drama. Most of his stories or plays were inspired by his personal life and family. He wrote many successful story one of which ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ that won many awards, recognitions and appraises from both plays, adaptations, interpretations and movies. The title of the story referred to the daily life and commute of the Character Blanche Dubois. ‘Desire’ is the name of the name of the street car line that ran down Bourbon through the quarter to Desire Street from 1920 to 1948. According to the play, “They told me to take a streetcar named Desire, transfer to one called Cemeteries and ride six blocks and get off at Elysian Fields” the playwright wanted to be as detailed as possible regarding the location and settings of the play mentioning every major streets and route in New Orleans. The character of Blanche’s was inspired by the playwright’s sister who had mental issues and became incapacitated after a surgical procedure called lobotomy. In the play, three major scandals that were not acceptable then and in today’s society took place: sex with a student/minor, gay relationship and adultery.
