A narrative device is a technique used by authors to help convey a message to their readers. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor there is an important narrative device used. In this story each character has an important role, but the most important role is the grandmother’s. She is ignored by her family which makes the reader think that she is an unimportant character that tends to talk too much, but she is the person to pay attention to. In the beginning of the story she mentions certain things that seem like harmless, classic grandmother talk, but what she says is very important. In this story O’Connor uses the narrative device of foreshadowing, through the grandmother, to convey his message. Foreshadowing is a warning or indication of a future event. This is exactly what the grandmother does in the story, she gives a warning to the readers of an atrocious event, but her family disregards it, which makes the readers disregard it. The story begins with the grandmother reading the newspaper when she says, “‘Now look here, Bailey,’ she said, ‘see here, read this,’ and she stood with one hand on her thin hip and the other rattling the newspaper at his bald head. ‘Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people.
