“Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.” (Lauren) Wearing flappers started in the 20s, the style outraged a rebellion in women. Women wore their flappers, makeup, smoke cigarettes, and drank. Then the 60s introduced the black leather jackets and tie-dye shirts. The miniskirt was also popular in this time but mostly the hippie time. (Lee) Historical events, technology, and music impacted the 1950s fashion.
In the 1950s, war had just ended and the fifties brought in more positive attitudes for the people but for African Americans equality was still an issue. Laws were passed for equality but segregation laws said they were “separate but equal.” In 1957 men from the KKK kidnapped a young black man in Birmingham, Alabama, they thought he had died but he survived and testified against them. (Kallen 37-41) Also in the late 50s televisions were at 90% of Americans home. People didn't have to go out to the theater or cinema anymore they had their tv there at home. (“The 1950s”) Teens hangouts were drive in movies, football games, or carhop restaurants. Usually on a date they wore their poodle skirts , cashmere sweaters or a "Peter Pan-style collared blouses" with their saddle shoes and penny loafers. Girdles were worn to tighten the waists, broad-strap bras, and full slips were used for lingerie. Hats, purses, and gloves were necessary for the fifties. Hair styles were either a bubble cut hairstyle or a poodle haircut. Boys wore their Levi jeans or Lee jeans and teenage boys wore their boots, leather coats, t-shirts and jeans cuffed up. Girls wore their pedal pushers and for school their dresses or blouses.
