A.C.D.

-Acid Citrate Dextrose

-acid citrate=anticoagulant, binds calcium, preserves cells+platelets

-dextrose feeds RBCs

-Solution A+B

-Used in DNA testing, human leukocyte phenotyping (HLA)+transplant compatibility

-YELLOW top (not gold)

-processed in Blood Bank OR Immunohematology

Antiglycolytic agent

-Substance that prevents the breakdownour metabolism of glucose by blood cells

-sodium flouride=most common

Antiseptic

-substance used to prevent sepsis, which is the presence of microorganisms or their toxic substances in the bloodstream

-greek "anti"=against + "septikos"=putrefactive

-examples=70% ethyl/isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, povidone-iodine, chlorohexadine gluconate, bensalkonium chloride

Disinfectant

-regulated by the EPA and used to remove or kill microorganisms on surfaces and instruments

-not safe for contact with human skin

-does not kill bacterial spores, so reusable equipment must be sterilized

EDTA

-ethyline diamine tetraacetic (all one word) acid

-anticolagulant

-makes calcium ions unavailable for coagulation

-preserves cell shape+structure (morphology) better than any other anticoagulant

-lavender, pink, white/pearl top tubes

-salt spray preferred over liquid bc of dilution

ETA

-evacuated tube system

-multisample needle+tube holder/hub+evacuated tubes

Heparin

-anticoagulant

-kelly green or mint green tube tops (also mottled green+grey tops, microhematacrit with red or green bands)

-inhibits thrombin (which converts fibrinigen into fibrin and factor X)

-ammonium, lithium or sodium formulations

-lithium most common bc of least interferance with chemistry test

-don't use lithium for testing lithium levels or sodium for sodium or electrolyte panels

Potassium oxalate

-anticoagulant that binds and removes calcium in insoluble salt

-commonly used with a glucose preservative (such as sodium flouride)

-grey top tubes (8-10 inversions)

PST

-Plasma separater tube

-thixotropic gel and heparin

- STAT tests

-mint green top

RST

-Rapid Serum tube

-orange or gray/yellow tube top

-contains thrombin additive for clotting within 5 minutes

-processed by chemistry dept.

Sodium citrate

-anticoagulant by binding or chelating calcium

-does the best job of preserving the coagulation factors

-light blue tube tops processed in coagulation dept. (3-4 inversions)

Sodium flouride

-antiglycolytic agent

-also inhibits growth of bacteria

-must be used with an anticoagulant for plasma samples or it will clot blood (can be used alone for serum specimens)

-grey top tube (5-10 inversions)

SPS

-sodium polyanethol sulfonate

-anticoagulant that binds calcium

-used in blood culture, bc it reduces action of complement protein that destroys bacteria

-slows down phagocytosis (leukocytes ingesting bacteria)

-inhibits some antibiotics

-yellow (not gold) top tube drawn first (8 inversions) processed in microbiology

SST

-serum separator tube

-gold or red/black tiger top tube with thixotropic gel and silica

-5 inversions processed in chemistry

Thixotropic gel

-inert synthetic gel that changes viscosity when centrifuged and separates the plasma or serum from the blood cells

-prevents cells from metabolizing substances in serum/plasma

PPT

-plasma preparation tubes

-white/pearl tops with EDTA additive

-used for molecular diagnostic tests (like pcr)
