7 elements of Marine Corps mission

- Provide Fleet Marine Force w/ combined arms & supporting air components.


- Provide detachments & organizations for service on armed vessels of the Navy & security detachments for protection of naval stations & basis.


- Develop, w/ USA, USN, USAF, the doctrine, tactics, techniques, & equipment employed by landing forces in amphibious operations.

Service: Pres, SecDef, SecNav, & Commandant of MC.


Operational: Pres, SecDef, Commanders of Combatant Commands for missions & forces assigned to their commands.

3 Marine Corps Operating Forces

Marine Corps Forces (MARFOR) organized under MAGTFs & are either employed as part of naval expeditionary force or separately as part of larger joint or combined force.


MC Security Force (MCSF) include approx. 3,400 Marines who protect key naval installations & facilities worldwide.


Marine Security Guard (MSG) Detachments @ embassies & consulates around the globe to Department of State for embassy security. Currently assigned to 171 posts in 135 countries.

Purpose of the Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC)

Consists of Commandant of the Marine Corps & those staff agencies that advise & assist the Commandant in discharging those responsibilities prescribed by law & higher authority.


Commandants directly responsible to SecNav for administration, discipline, internal organization, training, requirements, efficiency, & readiness of the USMC.

Describe, in general, a MAGTF

- Task organized, combined arms forced w/ organic ground, aviation, & sustainment element.


- Provides combatant commanders w/ versatile expeditionary forces capable of multinational ops/campaigns.


- Organized, trained, & equipped to perform shore/sea based missions from humanitarian assistance to peacekeeping.
