What are the steps of the Scientific Method?
Ask a question, make an observation, form a hypothesis, perform your experiment, analyze your results, draw conclusions, and communicate the results
Define: Physical Properties
Properties of matter that can be observed without changing the identity of the matter.
What are some examples of Physical Properties?
Color, size, odor, mass, volume, shape, conductivity, malleability, ductility, and solubility
Define: Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent (usually water)
Define: Conductivity
The transmission of heat or electricity through a substance
Define: Malleability
The ability to change the shape of an object by hammering it
Define: Ductility
The ability to pull a substance into long thin strands
Define: Density
The amount of matter in a given space, or the mass per unit volume
What is the equation for density?
Density=Mass divided by Volume
Define: Chemical Properties
Properties that describe a substance based on its ability to change into a new substance with different properties
When can Chemical Properties be observed?
They can only be observed when one substance might become a new substance
When does a Chemical Change occur?
When one or more substances are changed into new substances with different properties; such changed are NOT EASILY REVERSED!
Define: Compound
A pure substance/homogeneous composed of two or more elements chemically combined (bonded)
Define: Mixture
A combination of two or more substances, each of which keeps its own characteristics and may be considered heterogeneous or homogeneous. There is no chemical change when the components of a mixture are combined
What are some ways mixtures can be separated?
Filtration, magnetism, centrifuge, and evaporation
Define: Valence Electrons
Electrons on the outermost shell or ring of the atom
What do all chemical reactions require?
The breaking of chemical bonds, the rearranging of atoms, and the forming of new bonds
What are the signs of a chemical reaction?
Color change, gas production/bubbling, formation of a solid/precipitate, energy change
