What is the procedure to clear the disabled train from the section?

The driver of the relief train must:

- after receiving the train authority and the applicable fixed signal to enter the section proceed at normal speed to a distance of 2 km from the disabled train

- stop the train and endorse the data logger VC x 2

- proceed no faster than 15 km an hour to the driver

- pick up the driver

- obtain the train authority and the DRA from the driver of the disabled train and cancel them by writing the word cancelled, the time, date and signature across the face of the forms

- couple the trains together

- conduct a continuity test

- ensure the brakes work in the leading loco or drivers cab

- communicate with confident worker

- obtain permission from the train controller prior to moving the disabled train

The combined trains can then be moved in the direction stated on the train authority.

What actions will the driver of the disabled train take?

When a train in possession of a train authority becomes disabled, the driver must:

- declared the train to be disabled

- dictate a DRA to the train controller stating the location, length and weight of the train, if the train is a DMU and the number of carriages

- confirm the direction from which the relief train will approach

- secure the train

- carry out the cab unattended procedure

- take a form of off train communication

- take a red hand signal

- protect the disabled train in the direction the relief train will arrive by

- inform the train controller that the disabled train is protected

The train controller will then dictate a train authority to the signaller at the end of the section from which the relief train will enter. The train authority will be endorsed with the number and destinations stated on the original train authority held by the driver of the disabled train as well as stating to which end of the section the disabled train is to be taken.

The signaller will issue the train authority to the driver of the relief train who must sign the butt of the signaller’s form. If the relief train is at an unattended location the train controller will dictate the train authority directly to the driver of the relief train.

What actions will the driver of the relief train take?

Arriving at an attended location

The relief train driver must hand the train authority, cancelled DRA, and the original (cancelled) train authority to the signaller. The signaller will cancel the train authority after confirming the combined trains have arrived complete.

Arriving at an unattended location

The driver of the relief train is responsible for ensuring the combined train has arrived complete and then canceling the train authority.

The driver must notify the train controller of the time that the train Authority was cancelled and submit the cancelled DRA and cancelled train authorities with an irregularity report at the end of their shift.
