What is the authority for a driver of a relief train to enter the section from an attended station?

The train controller will advise the signaller and ask for the blocking facilities to be applied to secure the home departure signal at the STOP position.


The train controller will dictate a train authority to the signaller.


The signaller will issue the driver of the relief train with the train authority to enter the single line section.


The driver must read the contents and sign the butt of the train authority book.


NOTE: the home departure signal is kept at the STOP position. The train authority is your authority to pass the departure signal at stop.

What is the authority for a driver of a relief train to enter the section from an unattended station?

The train controller will arrange for blocking facilities to be applied to the home departure signal to secure it at the STOP position, then dictate the train authority to the driver. He must write the details on the correct train authority form.


The driver will read the contents of the train authority back to the train controller.


The driver may also be instructed to place the dual control point machine to the hand position . The train controller may instruct the driver to operate the DCPM as required.

Once the combined trains have cleared the section what is done with the authority forms at attended and unattended stations?

At an attended location the cancelled DRA and train authority is handed to the signaller. The signaller will cancel the train authority after confirming the combined trains have arrived complete.


At an unattended location the relief driver is responsible for ensuring the combined train has arrived complete then cancelling the train authority by writing the word cancelled with the time, date and signature across the face of the form.


The driver must also notify the train controller that the train authority was cancelled and submit the cancelled DRA and train authority with an irregularity report at the completion of the shift.

What is the procedure when a train is disabled and communication has failed?

The driver must make frequent urgent calls on the local radio to attract the attention of any trains in the area.


The driver must then:


- carry out the cab unattended procedure


- take a form of off train communication


- take a red hand signal


- protect the disabled train in the rear


After a while the train controller will adopt the train overtime in section procedure.

What is the procedure for a relief train to assist when it is already in the single line section?

A train authority is not required in this instance as the relief train has already entered the single line section by passing the home departure signal at proceed.


However, if the disabled train is to be returned to the location in the rear, a train authority is required for that movement.

What is the procedure for obtaining relief when communication is available?

The driver of the disable train must:


- declare the train to be disabled


- dictate a DRA to the train controller stating the location length weight and # carriages


- confirm the direction from which the relief train will approach


- secure the train and carry out the cab unattended procedure


- take a form of off train communication


- take a red hand signal


- protect the disabled train in the direction the relief train will arrive by


- inform the train controller that the disabled train is protected
