Functionalism

- What does Murdock say about the family?

Murdock argues that the family performs 4 essential functions, which meet the needs of society;

- Stable Satisfaction of the sex drive

- Reproduction of the next generation

- Socialisation of the young (into norms & vales)

- meeting its members' economic needs (food, shelter)

Functionalism

- Parsons and what he says about the family

In Parsons view the modern nuclear family specialises in performing 2 functions;

- The socialisation of Children

- Stabilisation of adult personalities

Parsons distinguishes between 2 kinds of family structure;

+ The Nuclear Family

+ The Extended Family

Marxism

- What does Marx say about the family?

Marx has identified 2 functions that they see the family as fulfilling for capitalism;

- The Inheritance of Property

- Ideological Functions (set of ideas or beliefs that justify inequality)

Marxism

- Zaretsky and his views on the family

Zaretsky says that women are takers of sh*t

- Their husbands come home from work and take out all their anger and stress on their wives.

- This supports a capitalist society as women are helping relieve the stress form their husbands work, so that they can go out and earn money.

Feminism

- Liberal, Oakley and Sharp

Oakley - Men did little around the house and so she thinks that changes in the law would make this more equal. - Which was true, later on the Sex Discrimination Act came into place.

Sharp - Teenage girls are becoming more ambitious in response to changes in society.

Feminism

- Marxist, Ansley

Women oppression performs functions for capitalism;

1) Women reproduce the labour force

2) Women absorb anger (Ansley 'describes wives as takers of sh*t')

3) Women are a 'reserve army' of cheap labour

Feminism

- Radical, Greer

Greer argues for the creation of all female (martrilocal) households as an alternative to the heterosexual family.

For Feminists the key division in society is between men and women;

- Men are the enemy

- Family and marriage are the key institutions in a patriarchal society.

Feminism

- Difference,

Difference feminism is a lot like Postmodernism

They argue that we cannot generalise about women's experiences.

They argue for example that lesbian & heterosexual women, white & black women, middle class & working class are all going to have very different experiences of the family.

The New Right

- Murray & Fletcher

Murray argues that the underclass is the single biggest problem that society faces. (this is the working class)

The New Right love the nuclear family.

They also believe the welfare state is too generous.

Postmodernism

-Stacey, Weeks Beck and Giddens

- Giddens, family and marriage have been transformed by greater choice and equality.

- Beck, we now live in a "risk society" where tradition has less of an influence but more has choice.

- Stacey, Greater choice has benefited women

- Weeks, a family is simply whatever arrangements those involved chose to call family.
