Functionalism and the Family ( A Consensus theory)

1. Functionalists believe that society is based on the value of consensus, which is a set of norms and values, into which society socialises its members.


2. Functionalists regard society as a system made up of different institutions that depend on each other.


3. Emphasise the positive role of the family


4. See every institution in society as needed for smooth running of society.

Marxism and the Family (A conflict theory)

1. Conflict view of society. This means there is conflict between the owners of factories, land etc. and the workers.


2. Sees all institutions as helping to maintain class inequality and Capitalism.


3. Preforms essential functions for modern Industrial society.


4. Family benefits the minority, the bourgeoisie.

New Right and the Family (A Political and Structural theory)

1. Focus and favour on the nuclear family.


2. Believe that society is broken and needs fixing like a machine.


3. Symptoms of a broken society according to NR include: a rise in lone parenthood and divorce, a growing underclass, a growing rate of truancy and a rise in anti-social adolescents.


4. Reduce help from the Welfare State - an overgenerous Welfare State causes the above and encourages culture of dependency. Another name for this is underclass.


5. Get individuals to be more independent

Postmodernism and the family (Diversity and Identity)

A postmodern society is fragmented into a wide variety of different groups. These groups are based on differences in ethnicity, age, religion, region, sexuality etc. This diversity gives individuals greater freedom to 'pick and mix' their identities from a wide range of sources.

Feminism and the Family

All feminists believe in: Male domination, existing inequality, family oppressing women and that women are exploited and controlled in the family.


There are different types of feminists:

4. Difference Feminists


5. Black Feminists



Interactionism and the Family

Micro scale theory and research - they focus on what actually happens within families.




Interactionists are interested in how family roles and responsibilities are interpreted, understood and negotiated by the members who actually experience it.
