Household unit

A group of people living together in the same residence and sharing living space, they might be related or not.

Normal, common and best type of family- Nuclear family

Made up of an adult man and an adult woman who are married, or in relationship, and living together with dependent children.

The functionalist, George Murdock- argued that the nuclear family of a mother, father and dependent children was the basic family unit worldwide.

George Murdock-argued , that the type of family that had a nuclear family at their heart is extended families.

Extended family- a nuclear family, living with other relatives such as grandparents or great-grandparents or aunt's, uncles and cousins.

Extended families + 2 types of extended families

- were common in past, now in decline, they seem less suited to life in modern industrial societies.

More than two generations- Vertically extended family

Same generation- Horizontally extended family e.g parents and children of the same generation.

2 forms of extended family

Classic extended family - several nuclear families (living close to each other in the same street or area, were common in past)

Modified extended family- refers to relatives who live far apart but are able to stay in contact(for example, by phones and emails) and are able to provide mutual support.

This form of family- is common in modern industrial societies - better communication and transport facilities.

Marriage creates what?

Kinship ties-; it is when the ties between people are related by descent (having a common ancestor) by marriage and by adoption.

Single parent family

It was caused - by the death of one of the parents, leaving the other parent in raise the children on their own.

Divorce

The formal, legal ending of a marriage.

Reasons why there is more single- parent families these days than in the past:

* Divorce has become common and it leaves one parent looking after the children

* Women have greater financial independence, they are more likely to have qualifications that allow them to work to support their family and they may be able to receive welfare benefits, so they do not need a man as a breadwinner.

*Some women now choose to raise children on their own, without the father around.
