Functionalism
(Emilie Durkheim)
-society is composed of many interrelated parts; and each part serves a particular societal function
-"social facts"--values, norms, and social structures external to the individual but that still exert control over the individual

-societal groups are engaged in continuous power struggle; supported capitalism which includes two groups: the capitalist class (thoes who owned/controlled the means of production) and the worker class (those who had to sell their own labor because they had no other means to earn a living)
