The respiratory systems major functions

• To supply sufficient amounts of oxygen to meet the the tissue demands of the body

• To eliminate any waste product (CO2)

Carbon dioxide is a gas produced during the consumption of oxygen

What it does for the body.

Structure and function of the lungs

We have 2 lungs sitting superior to the diaphragm located in the central thoracic region.

Left lung: 2 lobes

Right lung: 3 lobes

Each lung is surrounded with pleural membrane, and filled with pleural fluid. Providing them with sufficient space to expand and regulating pressure.

Saturated with 30 million alveoli and blood vessels which interact to pass gasses in and out of tissues.

FUNCTION: THE PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THE LUNGS IS TO PROVIDE A CONTINUOUS FLOW OF OXYGEN INTO BODILY TISSUES

What they’re made from and how they work.

Passage of air

During a breath (inspired air) enters the body via the nose and naval cavity

Pharynx

Performs many roles including respiration and digestion, during the respiration process it’s primary job is to further warm and humidify the air.

First stage

Larynx

Essential to speech and extends from the base of the tongue to the trachea

Plays a key roll in filtering the air.

Voice box

Trachea

Essentially a continuation of the larynx and it surrounded by cartilage rings to support and maintain its shape.

Plays a key role in the “cough reflex” used to expel any foreign irritant objects from the trachea.
