Respiratory System Lab Report

The overall function of the respiratory system is to supply the body with oxygen and dispose of carbon dioxide. In order for respiration to take place, pulmonary ventilation, external respiration, transport of respiratory gases, and internal respiration must occur. Pulmonary ventilation, commonly called breathing, is when air moves into and out of the lungs and gases continuously change and refresh. Breathing consist of two phases; inspiration, when air flows into the lungs and expiration, when gases exit the lungs. Physical factors that influence pulmonary ventilation are airway resistance, alveolar surface tension, and lung compliance. The amount of air flushed in and out of the lungs will depend on the conditions of inspiration and …show more content…
In our lab, we used a small electronic measuring device called a spirometer, which is a clinical measurement tool that utilizes a hollow bell inverted over water that the examinee blows into. The data recorded in Table 1 represents the Tidal Volume (TV), Vital Capacity (VC), and Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV). Tidal Volume is the amount of air that moves in and out of the lungs with each breath, measured at about 500 mL. Inspiratory Reserve Volume is the amount of air that can be inspired forcibly beyond the Tidal Volume measured at about 2,100 to 3,200 mL. As shown in Table 1, the students inspiratory reserve volume was measured at 1,583 ml. The vital capacity is the total amount of exchangeable air and is the sum of the tidal volume (TV), inspiratory reserve capacity (IRV) and the expiratory reserve volume (ERV). Expiratory reserve volume is the amount of air, measured at about 1000 to 1200 mL, that can be expelled from the lungs after a normal Tidal Volume expiration. For the students first trial, he had a 500 ml TV, a 700 ml ERV, and a 3000 ml VC. His average recorded Tidal Volume was about 519 ml, 833 ml ERV, and 2933 ml …show more content…
As shown in Figure 1, carbon dioxide was added to a beaker with a pH of 7. We observed that a good indication of a higher pH level than 7 would be a change in color. The liquid was comprised of phenol red, NaOH, and Carbon dioxide. If the liquid turned yellow, the pH was below 7. Acidosis, a declining blood pH, is an indication the levels of acid in your blood are too high and there is weakened Hb oxygen bonding. This would be considered a medical emergency because the concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood increases as the blood pH decreases. [2] Respiratory alkalosis would be considered an imbalance in pH due to alveolar hyperventilation. Alveolar hyperventilation leads to a decreased partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide (PCO2). [3] When respiratory levels are normal, the PCO2, is in between 35 and 45 mm Hg. The difference between respiratory acidosis and respiratory alkalosis are the values. Values below 45 mm Hg would be an indication of respiratory alkalosis and anything above 45 mm Hg would be considered respiratory acidosis.

The respiratory system is responsible for taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. The lungs are the main organs in the respiratory system. According to the American Lung Association, red blood cells collect the oxygen from the lungs and carry it throughout the body where it is needed. As the red blood cells travel through the body, they collect the carbon dioxide, taking it back to the lungs where it is then exhaled.…

After each subject was tested, the data was saved for future references and later analysis. In addition to having the proof of the experiment and be able to perform the experiment in a given amount of time which was about 3 hours. Then, when the data was going to be analyze and recorded to our tables, several functions were added to the analysis screen of the software to get the data needed. From the data collected, it was recorded the tidal volume, breath period, inhalation and exhalation. With the functions added, the V2-V1 gave the Tidal Volume, T2-T1 gave the Breath Period, Max_dv/dt and Min_dv/dt gave the inhalation and the exhalation.…

Respiration is a process, which conducts the circulation of air between the lungs and the external environment. Two main mechanisms involved in the respiration process is the act of inspiration and expiration. Inspiration involves the inhaling of oxygen into the lungs. Expiration involves the exhalation of carbon dioxide into the external environment. Respiration is important to human body because it is a major contributor to speech.…

In the article, “Compressive Forces and Computed Topography-derived Positive End-expiratory Pressure in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome” (Cressoni et al. 2014), the researchers' hypothesis was that there was a direct correlation between lung recruitability and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). This would validate the prevailing notion that higher PEEP is only for patients with higher lung recruitability. Previous studies have led to advancements in the field such as the switch from optimal gas exchange to lung protection (Lachmann 1994) and that the optimum PEEP level should avoid lung damage through intratidal opening and closing (Carioni et al. 2010). The study was influenced by previous findings (Phoenix et al. 2009)…

Respiratory acidosis, or respiratory failure, occurs when the lungs cannot produce enough CO2, which causes blood pH to drop below 7.35 and PCO2, or partial pressure of carbon dioxide, is increased above 45 mmHg. Some causes for respiratory acidosis include airway obstruction, emphysema, pulmonary edema, and other chronic or acute lung disorders. If respiratory problems are not too extreme then the kidneys will help out with raising the blood pH by excreting H+ and reabsorbing HCO3-, this is called renal compensation. Treatments for respiratory acidosis involve treating the underlying condition such as antibiotics for infections, diuretics to reduce blood pressure, bronchodilators to expand airways for COPD or asthma, or medical ventilation in severe cases (Weatherspoon, 2015).…

    (a) Acidosis is a result of reduced pH levels in the blood. A person stops breathing during cardiac arrest because, as the heart stops pumping blood, there is no pulmonary circulation. As a result, the lungs are not removing CO2 produced by the body. Excess CO2 causes the pH of blood and other bodily fluids to decrease, making them too acidic. In other words, acute respiratory acidosis occurs because the person cannot breathe during cardiac arrest.…

Acid-Base Case study 1 The acid base balance of the body is mainly regulated by respiratory and renal system together with the body ‘buffer system. For the body to function normally, the hydrogen ion (H+) needs to be concentrated within a narrow range, represented as pH, which determines the acidity and alkalinity of a solution. Changes in the bicarbonate (HCO3) concentration causes metabolic acidosis or metabolic alkalosis while changes in the rate of alveolar ventilation and carbon dioxide concentration decides respiratory alkalosis or respiratory acidosis. Normally arterial blood gas analysis are used to assess the acid-base balance.…

John, 2015). As mentioned before, the lungs of the respiratory system collaborate with the kidneys to control pH of the body, more so the blood. Unusually low blood pH causes rapid breathing, which effects the amount of CO2 in the body. This gas majorly impacts the determination of blood pH, therefore breathing into a paper bag if hyperventilation occurs allows for the rebreathing of carbon dioxide to keep the pH level of blood at homeostatic equilibrium (Herr & Cunningham, n.d).…

Powerlab 4 Questions When taking our subject’s different capacities, we found that her inspiratory capacity (IC) was 5.58 L, vital capacity (VC) was 5.85 L, functional residual capacity (FRC) was 1.74 L, and her total lung capacity (TLC) was 7.32 L. When comparing these numbers to the averages for a woman’s capacity we find that: her IC was more than double of that of an average woman (5.58 L compared to 2.4 L); her vital capacity was greater than average as well (5.85 compared to 3.1 L). However, when it comes to FRC we see our subject was slightly smaller than the average (1.74 compared to 1.8 L). When looking at her TLC we see that she is once again above par (7.32 L compared to 4.2 L). Factors potentially affecting these values include: if a person smokes, gender, asthma, emphysema, and tuberculosis.…

Introduction Every mammal uses their lungs to breathe, but not all lungs are the same. Considering the differences between males and females, it is likely that their lungs would be slightly different. But, would the males or the females have better lungs? The best way to figure out the solution to this question is to measure the vital capacity of both genders. The vital capacity is the amount of air that can be pushed out of the lungs voluntarily (Lung Capacity Measurement Lab Handout).…

Keeping our body’s pH balance in check is always important this because proper body function can happen and we remain healthy. If your blood pH were to drop below 7.35 you would develop a condition called acidosis. Then depending on the cause of this acidosis whether it be the kidneys or the lungs would determine the kind of acidosis. If it is the kidneys causing the acidosis we would call it a metabolic acidosis, where is if it were the lungs it would be called a respiratory acidosis. Know if your blood pH for some reason would be above 7.35 you would be considered alkalosis.…
