Grade 1 acne

Mild; open and closed comedones

Grade 2 acne

Mild; open and closed comedones; occasional papule or pustule

Grade 3 acne

Moderately severe; numerous open and closed comedones, papules, pustules; occasional cysts; red and inflamed

Grade 4 acne

Severe; numerous papules and pustules; lots of cysts; large cystic lesions leave deep scarring

Benzoyl peroxide

Dry and exfoliate; helps in killing bacteria

Topical antibiotics

Medications prescribed by a physician to dry skin and kill bacteria

Retin-A

Contains tretinoin-derivitave of vitamin A; dries skin and promotes rapid exfoliation

Azaleic acid

An acid that promotes drying and cell turnover

Salicylic acid

Glycolic acid

Alpha hydroxy acid that breaks bonds that connect skin cells allowing for cell turnover and exfoliation
