Acne Vulgaris Lab Report

Teens and young adults all over the world suffer from the condition of acne vulgaris. Up to ninety-five percent of adolescents are affected, and as many as fifty-four percent of adults as well (Cordain, 2002). Acne is characterized by the inflammation of skin glands and hair follicles (Williams, 2011). This condition is “the most common skin disorder in the United States [and it] affects 40 to 50 million Americans” (McGurgan, 2012). The given statistic is according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Often times, acne is treated through prescribed antibiotics, drug store topical creams, and natural remedies. Treatment primarily depends on the severity of the acne, this experiment will test the strength of acne remedies on Staphylococcus Albus. Staphylococcus Albus is one of the most common bacterias found within acne, and as it is a gram positive bacteria, it allows for testing with the auger provided. The hypothesis that will be tested is if Benzoyl peroxide is used it will decrease the amount of bacteria grown over a twenty-four hour period, when the growth of …show more content…
Essential oils are extracted from naturally occurring plants, and have both aromatic and healing characteristics. Tea tree oil is steamed out of the leaves and branches of the Australian plant melaleuca alternifolia (Carson, 2006). It is an essential oil and has been used as a topical antiseptic for many years, and it also contains anti-inflammatory agents as well. This natural antiseptic is used in plants as a defense against bacteria and parasites. When applied to acne comedones, tea tree oil penetrates the pores and clears the blockages. Many people enjoy using natural remedies to treat their conditions.
