Define respiration.
A chemical reaction carried out by all living cells where glucose and oxygen react to produce carbon dioxide, water and releases energy.
What is the primary objective for the respiratory system?
Supply the blood with oxygen, it does this through breathing.
What is the Trachea?

Transfers air from throat to lungs.

Catches dust.

Can collapse for large food.

A pipe surrounded with 15-20 C shaped rings. It connects the throat to the bronchi.

What is the bronchi?
It transfers air to lungs. It has one tube for each lung.
What are bronchioles?
They transport air. Less than 1mm diameter. Lead to alveolar sacs.
What are alveoli?
Hollow cavities inside alveolar sacs. Thin walls to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Moves oxygen to blood. They are surrounded by capillaries.
What is the main function of the respiratory system?
exchange gases
What is the more scientific name for the windpipe?
Trachea
What is the function of the diaphragm?
To control inhalation and exhalation
What is the equation for respiration?
Sugar + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water+ energy
What are the air sacs where gas exchange occurs called?
Alveoli
What are the tubes that branch from the trachea called?
Bronchus, (bronchioles) or Bronchi
What is the function of cilia?
To catch dust and clean lungs.
What is the movement of substances from highest concentration to lowest called?
Diffusion
What is the function of cartilage in the trachea?
To hold open the trachea to allow air flow.
What are the muscles between the ribs that help the diaphragm?
Intercostal muscles
