Cultural ID Development Theory
Sequence
1 Naivete/embedded awareness of self as cultural being
2 Encounter with reality of cultural issues
3 Naming of cultural issues
4 Reflection on meaning of self as cultural being
5 Some form of internalization and multiperspective thought about self-in-system
1 Naivete/embedded awareness of self as cultural being
hardly aware of self as cultural being. E.g. skin color not important to kids.
2 Encounter with reality of cultural issues
Experience shows naivete was inadequate. “It’s diff to be African American that White”
3 Naming of cultural issues
Naming “sexism” transformed women’s view of selves.
May refuse to work with oppressors (usually Euro White Males)
For Whites, name phase hard: whites have no sense of positive ID (this may be one of the biggest problems in our culture. The bulk of us have forgotten who we are).
4 Reflection on meaning of self as cultural being
May turn away from White culture, become immersed in reflection on African American history and Black community. This is where a definite cultural consciousness is established.
5 Some form of internalization and multiperspective thought about self-in-system
Pride in awareness of self and others
Sees worth of some aspects of dominant culture, fights the racist/oppressive elements.
Integrates all previous stages in transcendent consciousness.
Sees world thru multiple frames of reference.
Makes action in racist society difficult
Exhausting
Application
e.g Female, African American nurse with PTSD from Gulf War.
Multiple cultural IDs
We all cycle through this process repeatedly, and may be at different stages regarding different issues.
Application to therapy
MCT must seek to be aware of cultural ID issues for therapist and client.
Client should be encouraged to take the lead
Specifics
Ppl have varying consciousness about ethnic background.
Thers must be able to recognize cultural ID level, then match interviewing style to that level of client awareness.
