Pre-labor

In this stage urination is prominent, due to "lightening"

First stage

During this stage of labor contractions are painful, less than 10 minutes apart, and last 30-90 secs.


The amniotic sac ruptures.

Lasts an average of 12 hours


Ends when the cervix is dilated 10cm

Second stage

In this stage the infant moves through the birth canal, body and head rotation become evident.

Third stage

Uterine contractions continue to return to normal position


Placenta is delivered 5-30 minutes after the baby


Breastfeeding may occur


Abdominal massaging may happen to encourage contractions
