Homeostasis

This is the maintenance of a stable internal environment, allows the cells and tissues of the body to function optimally

Women vary ,individually, in this.

Neurotransmitters

Nerve cells communicate with these chemical signals..

Central Nervous System

Consists of the brain and spinal cord

Peripheral Nervous System

Sensory- information

Motor-instructions

Voluntary- conscious control

Autonomic- unconscious control of smooth, organs, and glands.

Don't forget:

Sympathetic-"fight or flight"

Parasympathetic-"rest and digest"

Female

10% More white brain matter, that connects parts of the brain

Male

Have 7% more grey matter for processing info

Endocrine System

A collection of glands and hormones

Specific

Integumentary System

It provides a a barrier between the outside environment and the inside of the body

Protects against thermal physical and chemical injury

Relatively waterproof

sensitive

Highly sensitiveAbout appearance

sensitiveAbout appearance

About appearance

SkinHairFingernailsAnd other structures

Skeletal System

Consists of bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilages

Muscular System

Skeletal muscles- voluntary

Smooth muscles- involuntary

Cardiac muscle- makes up the heart and spontaneously contracts

Don't forget: women are slower to gain muscle but once they gain it they are also slower to lose it.

Cardiovascular System

Transports the blood throughout the body

Heart, blood vessels, and blood

Fun Fact

Estrogen has a protective effect on CV health

Postmenopausal women are at higher risk for CV disease, due to the decrease of estrogen with age.

In 1991 the Women's Health Initiative revealed increase of breast cancer and also CV disease.

Testosterone induces red blood cell info, so women tend to have lower red blood counts.

Lymphatic System

Lymph( intermingled with the immune system)

Consists of vessels that run parallel to blood vessels and travel fluids through lymph nodes, contain lymphocytes (white blood cells) which fight infection.

Immune System

Defends the body against pathogens

Nonspecific- defends against a wide range of pathogens including the physical and chemical barriers

Specific- defends against individual pathogens based on immunology memory and antibodies and T cells.

These defense work together to provide protection for what..?

Fun fact

Under physiological stress women have a more active immune system.

This may result in higher rates of autoimmune diseases like MS, lupus, arthritis, etc.

Respiratory System

Functions to move air in and out of the lungs but also for gas exchange, verbal communication, and your sense of smell.

Consists of the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs

Fun fact

Vital lung capacity for women is 3.1L but 4.8 for men. (Proportions may vary)

Women are more prone to lung cancer for unknown reasons.

Digestive System

Absorbs nutrients from food, and removes the waste

Consists of the mouth, teeth, saliva, esophagus, small intestine, large, pancreas, gall bladder, and liver.

Fun fact

Women need more iron 18mg than men 8mg bcuz of menstrual cycle demands. Even more so in pregnant women.

Women need more calcium

100mg daily up to age 50

1500mg daily age 51 and older

Same for men but proportionally less.

-12-32% more body fat is healthy for women

-5-25% is healthy for men

Fat

Body fat accumulates in the hips, thighs and butt for women

The abdomen for men.

Urinary system

Removes water soluble wastes from the blood and urine

Includes the kidneys, uterus, bladder and urethra

Urination is coordinated by involuntary and voluntary sphincters

Fun fact

The urethra is significantly shorter in women than men, this likely contributes to urinary tractor infections in women

Childbirth may damage the sphincters which causes incontinence.
