Ectopic Pregnancy

This is when the embryo implants somewhere OTHER THAN the uterus.

Placental abruption

This is the separation of the placenta from the uterus.

Highly dangerous

Miscarriage

It is a spontaneous abortion, typically happens in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy

Some are experienced as a "late period" but it occurs in 25% of pregnancies

Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn

This is caused by incompatible blood types of the mom and fetus.

The mother is Rh negative and the baby is Rh positive.

Women with negative blood cells take precaution, "AB-, B-, O-,etc."

Hyperemesis Gravidarum

This is what Amy Schumer has with her baby due to excessive vomiting, resulting in dehydration and acid bodily disruption.

IV may be necessary

Gestational Diabetes

Insulin resistance in the placenta resulting in high blood sugar in the mother and baby.

Both baby and mom are in risk of Type II Diabetes later in life.

Streptococcus Infection

It is a vaginal or rectal infection. Caused by Group B streptococci bacteria. Common in mothers 25% but can result in brain and lung damage for baby or death

Antibodies can be distributed

Amniocentesis

It is the sampling of amniotic fluid with an ultrasound between week 14 and 16

There is a slight risk of miscarraige

Chorionic Villi Sampling

This is the sampling of chorionic villi, taken between week 8 and 10

Detects genetic abnormality like amniocentesis but has a higher risk of miscarriage.

Fetoscopy

A direct view of the fetus using fiber optics

Even higher risk

Contraction Stress Test

This an oxytocin stimulation to observe the fetus' response, particularly heart rate.

Fetal Non stress Test

The mother is given a sweet drink ( almost the same as a Contraction Stress Test)

Inductions of Labor

Methods that bring on labor:

-Prostaglandin application

-Stripping or sweeping (fingering the amniotic sac separate from the cervix to trigger labor)

-Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin)

-"Breaking the water"

Fetal Heart Monitoring

This is the method the machine tracking the heart rate of the fetus as you are in labor, which can be stressful

Systemic Analgestics

Sedatives, narcotics, barbiturates, tranquilizers

Pain medication

Will effect the baby if you breastfeed right after labor.

Regional blocks

Para cervical blocks

Pudendal blocks- perineum, vulva, and vagina

Spinal blocks

Epidural are all what sort of interventional blocks?

Episiotomy

This is a survival cut to the vaginal opening for greater ease during childbirth

Preeclampsia

Difficulty with hypertension or high blood pressure during pregnancy

Basically the autoimmune system response disrupting fetal development.

Assisted Vaginal Birth

The use of a vacuum or forceps are what forms of intervention?

These interventions help with vaginal birth but can have a brain damaging risk.

Postpartum Depression

This is deep sadness that occurs after the birth of a child, affects 1in 7 mothers

This is real, psychotherapy is used to treat this and in some severe cases; medication.
