The treatment or study of diseases or conditions affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth or dental implants
Periodontics/Periodontology
Two Major Periodontal Disease Categories:
Gingivitis and Periodontitis
Inflammation of the gingiva without loss of connective tissue or bone, reversible
Gingivitis
Inflammation of the gingiva, Pocket formation, and Loss of connective tissue and/or bone
not completely reversible
Periodontitis
Bone loss occurs at a more
rapid rate: Localized @ circumpubertal onset, then generalized, unique bacterial etiology, possible immune defect
Aggressive Periodontitis
bacterial deposits on the teeth
Dental Plaque
calcified deposits on the teeth or calcified dental plaque
Calculus
Space between tooth and gingival margin caused by
connective tissue loss, epithelial migration
Periodontal Pocket
measure pocket depth/loss of attachment, calibrated instrument
periodontal probe
Measurement of the loss of connective tissue attachment to the root, measure the distance from the CEJ to base of the pocket
Loss of Attachment
2 Treatments for Gingivitis:
Oral Hygiene Instructions:
toothbrushing and interdental cleaning and Scale & Polish: Dental Prophylaxis
Removal of plaque and stain deposits from teeth surfaces by scaling and polishing: Scalers & curettes and polishing tooth surfaces with prophy paste
Dental Prophylaxis
Treatment of Periodontitis:
Oral Hygiene Instructions, Scale & Root Plane, Surgery, and Frequent Recall (q. 3 months)
Instrumentation of the root surface to remove deposits of plaque and calculus and to produce a smooth root surface.

re‐eval 4‐6 weeks later: determine if an acceptable endpoint of treatment has been achieved.
Root Planing
Provides access for root planing in deep pockets and facilitates pocket reduction
Periodontal Flap Surgery
use Bone Grafts, Guided Tissue Regeneration, and Biologic Mediators
Periodontal Regeneration
Other Perio Related Procedures:
Sinus Lift prior to Implants, Esthetic Surgical Crown Elongation, Implants with Restorations
