outline the multi store model.
the multi-store model of memory is the flow of information through a series of stages in a fixed sequence. the first stage is, where information is received, the sensory memory. This receives haptic, echoic & iconic information. it is then drawn to the attention of the memory and rehearsed and held in the STM where after a limited time the information is transferred to the LTM. The LTM holds this information for an unlimited amount of time until it may need to be retrieved back into the short term memory of use. this was proposed by Atkinson & Shiffrin
strength of the MSM
important contribution to memory research
strength of the MSM
research supports the Multi-store model
strength of the MSM
research and psychologists agree that there is a basic distinction between STM of limited capacity & the permanent.
weakness of the MSM
oversimplified model
weakness of the MSM
Craik & Lockhart argue that we remember better if we process information semantically (meaning)
weakness of the MSM
we use various strategies, other than rehearsal, to improve our memories
