The multi-store model by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) states that memory consists of three stores; the sensory store, short- term store and the long-term store. Information from the environment initially goes into sensory memory which we do take much not take much notice of, but the moment we pay attention to it, the information gets encoded and passed down into the short- term memory. Since the short-term memory has a finite duration and capacity, it cannot be passed down into the long-term memory without rehearsal, in theory the information can remain there forever.
