Encoding?
How information is changed so that it can be stored.
How can it be encoded?
Visual, acoustic and semantic.
Duration?
How long it can be stored. STM- 30 second to 1 minute 30 seconds.
LTM- Forever.
Capacity?
How much can be stored.
STM- 7 plus/minus 2 items.
LTM- Endless.
STM encoding?
Brandimote ( 1992)
Asked to visualise image
-mentally remove part of shape
-give shape new name
-remember name of shape at end
2nd group said LALA outload to visually encode.
Seperate stores support?
Brain scan show that LTM and STM uses different parts of the bran. No demand characteristic or researcher bias.
STM duration?
Peterson and Peterson.
24 University students.
Nonsense tri-grams.
Avoided vowels, could put meaning to it. Had to count backwards in threes from number.
3,6,9,12,15,18 were the time intervals.
As time increased, correct recall decreased.
Low ecological validity, low in mundance realism
Also a small sample, and not varied enough, used similar intellect and aged people.
STM capacity?
Presented series of letters/numbers, and participant had to recall in correct order.
Age, disability and IQ could affect it. 10 digits and 24 letters, less to remember.
LTM duration?
Barrack et al (1975)
48 years after graduation asked to connect names to faces.
70% accurate in ability.
However if just had to name faces, accuracy decreased.
High in mundane realism
Extrenous details involved though- who they were friends with.
Dependant on task however.
Diagram?
Environmental stimuli- sensory memory-- attention-short term memory--- maintenance rehearsal-long term memory-- elaborative rehearsal.
