In a question, what does it mean by stock system?

It means the system of names where the oxidation status is indicated by roman numerals, commonly in parentheses.

What does the term acid refer to?

A solution of the acid compound in water.

When working with ions, how do you transform them into a chemical formula?

You criss-cross the oxidation numbers. If the oxidation numbers are the same number, they cancel each other out.

What are the nine rules of oxidation numbers?

1.) pure elements are zero (neutral)

2.) The greater the electronegativity of an element, the higher the charge when an ion.

3.) F is always -1

4.) O is -2, but -1 ONLY in H2O2, O is +2 with metals

5.) H is +1, -1 with metals

6.) Sum of them must be 0 unless specified

7.) Polyatomic ion's number=the sum of all atoms involved

8.) applies to both covalent and ionic

9.) monatomic ions = their usual charge

What is an empirical formula?

It is the simplified version of a molecular formula.

The molar mass is the same as

the formula mass.

How do you go from percent composition to the empirical formula?

You change the percents to grams.

Divide the grams by the element's molar mass. (May need to double)

Divide all of that by the smallest number.

How do you go from the empirical formula to the molecular formula?

You find the mass of the e.f.

You divide the molar mass (which will be given) by the mass of the e.f.

You apply that number to the e.f.

How do you go from molecular formula to empirical formula?

Simplify.

How do you go from molecular formula to percent composition?

You find the mass of each element and divide each of those by the molar mass (the total mass of the compound).

This is a really short study guide because it is all math.

Have basic math comprehension skills and you are fine.
