What is Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes.
Traditional divisions of chemistry
include...... |
Analytical, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry
Purpose of chemistry
Helps you to understand the world and to make informed decisions about scientific issues.
applied chemistry/chemical technology
a chemistry used to attain a specific goal.
pure chemistry
accumulates knowledge for it's own sake.
experiment
a carefully controlled , repeatable procedure for gathering data to test an hypothesis.
hypothesis
a proposed explanation for observations.
scientific law
a concise statement that summarizes the results of many observations and experiments. Describes a natural phenomena without attempting to explain it. Can often be expressed by simple mathematical relationships.
Gay - lussac's law
summarizes what happens when a sealed, gas -filled container is heated The pressure of gas is directlt proportional to the Kelvin temperature at conatant volume. Pressure can thus rise dangerously high and lead to an explosion. Gay-Lussac's law states whathappens. a theory explains why.

Describe the steps involved in the scientific method
1. observation 4.
2. hypothesis 3. experiments repeated to test hypothesis, 4. theory, |
Theory
a broad and extensively testted explanation of why experiments give certain results. Can never be proved because it is always possible that a new experiment will disprove it. They are useful bcause they help you formmental pictures of objects or processes that cannot be seen.
