What are body cavities lined with?

serous membrane

dorsal cavity, cranial cavity, vertebral / spinal cavities, ventral cavity

diaphragm

separates the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity

thoracic cavity

Mediastinum

region between sternum and vertebral column; contains everything except for the lungs in the thoracic cavity

Pleural cavity

a pleural cavity surrounds each lung, and is lined by pleura

Thoracic cavity, mediastinum, pleural cavity

Pericardial

Peritoneum

A serous membrane that lines the abdominopelvic cavity

Abdominal

Upper part of the abdomipelvic cavity;

Abdere means to hide; it hides the visceral cavity - stomach, spleen, gall bladder, pancreas, small intestine, and most of the large intestine

Pelvic Cavity

rest of the large intestine, bladder, and reproductive organs

Abdominopelvic cavity

Quadrants (info)

Two lines intersect at the umbilicus, dividing the abdominopelvic region into 4 quadrants (left & right, upper & lower)

Often appendicitis or other internal pain may be referred to any of these quadrants

Regions (info)

Another scheme involves dividing abdominopelvic area into 9 regions:

Umbilical; Epigastric (directly above umbilical); Hypogastric (directly below umbilical, including pubic region); Iliac region (right & left lateral to hypogastric; includes hip bones); Lumbar region, left & right (between ribs & upper part of hip bones); Hypochondriac regions, left & right (lateral to epigastric & includes lower ribs)
