What are some reasons why we form relationships?

Appearance, similarity, complementary, reciprocal attraction, competence, disclosure, proximity, rewards.

What is social exchange theory?

Rewards-costs=outcome

Relationships suffer when one partner feels underbenefited. The equation is used to determine if another person is a "good deal" or "not worth the effort."

Describe those reasons we form relationships.

Disclosure- builds liking; when others share private info with you it makes it seem like they respect and trust you.

Competence- love to be around talented people because we hope that rubs off on us. Not too talented though, makes them look bad.
