where are bipolar neurons found?
sense organs
what is the most common type of neuron in the body?
multipolar neuron. this is a classic motor neuron
where are pseudounipolar neurons found?
spinal and cranial ganglia
what are the Nissl bodies?
when stained, when stained, the cytoplasm of neurons is dark because of the large amount of ER and free ribosomes.
where is the initial site of action potential generation?
initial segment of axon
what is the cytoplasm within the initial segment of the axon called?
axon hillock
what is important about staining of the axon hillock?
the Nissl bodies are absent
what are lipofuscin granules?
accumulated debris when lysosomal degradation in the neuron cannot be completed.
what is the simplest and most common type of sensory ending? is the fiber myelinated?
"free ending." dendrite terminal branches simply taper to points. fibers are un- or lightly myelinated.
what is a muscle spindle? what does it do?
sensory organ within skeletal muscle. 8-10 modified skeletal muscle fibers (intrafusal fibers) with central nuclei, all surrounded by connective tissue capsule. it is a stretch receptor
what are annulospiral endings?
sensory endings wrapped around the nuclear regions of the muscle spindle
what are flower spray endings?
sensory endings wrapped around the non-nuclear striated regions of the muscle spindle
where are Pacinian Corpuscles and what do they sense?
they are deep in the dermis and sense deep pressure
where are Meissner's corpuscles and what do they sense?
found in dermal papillae and they are sensitive mechanoreceptors
where are Merkel cells found and what are they a part of?
found in skin basal layer and are part of a mechanosensory complex. they are not encapsulated
where are Ruffini's endings found?
encapsulated receptors in dermis and joints. they sense pressure and touch.
