What are the shipping papers called for Air transport ?
An Air Bill and are with the pilot or in reach from the pilots seat.
What are the shipping papers called for Water transport ?
Dangerous Cargo Manifest and are in the Bridge.
Define Hazard
a possible risk of being exposed to something harmful.
Describe Exposure
Standing near a hazardous substance or getting a hazmat substance on PPE where it did not make direct contact with the skin.
Describe Contamination
Direct contact with Hazmat is considered contamination.
Describe Secondary or cross contamination...
Secondary or cross contamination is transferred by decon, or contact with another person, object who was a primary or first contact who had direct contamination.
Describe the 4 basic types of decontamination.
Technical
Emergency
Mass-removal
radiation
Describe Technical decon..
deliberate thorough process for removing contaminants. usually 6 step or line set up.
Describe Emergency Decon.
Rapid removal of contaminants.
Describe Mass decon
removal of contaminants from a large group of people by water fog or spray from hose streams above.
Describe radiation decontamination.
Removal of clothing, brushing or water is not recommended.
Dilution is..
reducing the concentration of the contaminant usually by flowing lots of water.
Absorption is ...
soaking up a material.
Adsorption is..
binding or adhere or holding onto a material by chemical interaction.
Neutralization is...
the chemical degredation of an acid or base back to or near a ph of 7.
what are 3 types of container stress ?
Thermal
Mechanical
chemical
what are 2 types of Harm ?
physical and health.
Describe physical harm.
Fire/ explosions, thermal, and flying objects, mechanical.
Describe health harm.
poisons, corrosives, asphyxiants, radiological and etilogical harm.
What are the 3 main hazmat incident response modes ?
Nonintervention, defensive and offensive.
Awareness, operations, technical.
what are 8 types of strategic goals for hazmat incidents?
Isolation
notification
protection
spill control,
leak control
fire control
and recover/termination.
describe unified command.
unified command is command shared among different agencies for common purpose.
What are some standard group/branch posts of the ics in hazmat opperations?
Safety officer, should be trained to level of incident.
Entry unit leader, oversees entry teams , back up teams and RIT teams
Decon unit leader, oversees the technical and emergency decon in the warm zone.
Site Access unit leader, controls access in and out of the hot zone.
Tactical planning unit leader, conducts research of caontainer, product and environment.
what are the 3 Hazmat incident levels?
Level 1, Potential emergency condition.
Level 2- Limited emergency condition, more severe than level 1.
Level 3- Full emergency condition, most severe to threats to life and property.
Describe Evacuation
Process of moving people out of a hazard zone and to a safe area.
Describe Sheltering in place..
the process of taking shelter inside a building or structure with a short term exposure.
Describe a safety Breifing--
verbalizing the aspects of PPE, monitoring, tasks to perform, site characterization, and evaluation, hazard and risk identification and communications.
Describe Mitigation.
Mitigation is the process of making the incident less harsh, less hostil, less sever, less intense or painful, less destructive, to aleviate.
What are Booms.
Booms are most commonly used on sorbent-style waterways and when products float on the water.
Wier dams or filter fences are used for what ?
to try to contain, filter missible particles in a liquid usually water.
What are 2 different types of dams used in control opperations.
Overflow, when hazmat has a specific gravity of more than 1.
Underflow ,when hazmat has a specific gravity of less than 1
What are the 3 Ds in difensive control of liquid hazmats
Daming
diking
diverting
Diverting is...
redirecting the materials normal flow.
Daming or retention is..
storing the product in make shift holding area.
Dilution is...
physically thinning out a substance or reducing the concentration level by addinga solvent or copious amounts of water.
Vapor Dispersion is...
spraying a water fog stream into the vapor cloud plume.
Vapor suppression is...
a process of covering a material which is giving off vapors, may be done by using, plastic, water, sand or foam soultion.
what is a foam blanket used for?
to put out a fireby reducing the temperature, suffocating or suppressing the oxygen.
AFFF is what?
Aquious Film forming foam, is protien foam and usually the best foam to use.
AR-AFFF is what?
Alchohol resistant aqueous film forming foam which has polar solvent compatibility and forms a foam blanket that works well on polar or alchohol fuels or fuel mixtures.
What percentages are usually used in making foam?
3% is used for hydrocarbon fires.
6% is used for polar solvent or alchohol fires.
How much water is needed to use up a 3% mixture from a 5 gal pail of foam concentrate?
485 gallons.
97 gal water to 1 gal of concentrate.
97:1 = 485:5
What are the guide lines for using foam Eductors.
GPM ratings much match the the nozzle gpm.
use no more than 150' of hose between the eductor and the nozzle.
Clean eductor after each use to prevent clogging.
usually set the outlet pressure at between 175 and 200psi for eductor work.
What are the 3 main methods of applying foam steams ?
Roll-on
Bank-down
Rain-down.
what are 3 main foam expansion ratings?
Low, medium and High.
Describe APR s..
1Air purefying respirators.
2 they do not have an independant air supply.
3 they use specific filter cartidges for specific types of contaminants
4 they cannot be used in IDLH environments.
5 cannot be used in 0 2 deficient environments.
Describe PAPR s...
1 Powered Air Purefying Respirators
2 Same as APRs but they have a electric blower to ease breathing through the filters.
Describe SAR s...
1. Supplied Air Respirators
2 has air supplied from a remote source and supplied through a hose up to 300 ft long.
3. Good for long periods of work that exceed the supplies in SCBAs.
4. Lighter weight.
5. needs to have a separate emergency escape pack.
Describe an SCBA ...
Self Contained Breathing Apperatus.
2 Offers protection against most types and levels of airborn contaminants but air supply is limited.
Open circut scba is positive pressure and what is used by most fire fighters.
Closed circuit SCBA in an apparatus that takes exhaled air and recycles it to remove CO2 and may add in more O2. These usually have 2 hoses going to the face mask.
EPA CPC ppe Level A is..
the highest available protection for respiratory, skin and eye protection and requires a SCBA or SAR. Consists of a fully encapsulated suit and is used where vapor protection from gases is needed.
EPA CPC ppe Level B is..
a decreased level of protection but it still protects the skin, respiratory system from splashes and sprays and still requires a SCBA or SAR. it is nonencapsulated.
EPA CPC ppe Level C is
Another decrease in the level of protection but still good for splash or spray prtection in an environment with sufficient air supply to use a APR or an PAPR. more commonly used in an industrial site vs and emergency incident.
EPA CPC ppe Level D is..
The least protection, it is generally work clothes with or without respiratory protection.
