25 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back

brainstem

hindbrain & midbrain, most primitive region of the brain

limbic system

emotion & memory; aggression, fear, pleasure, & pain; septum, amygdala, and hippocampus

cerebral cortex

outer covering of cerebral hemispheres; language and problem solving; complex perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral processes

medulla oblongata

lower brain structure responsible for breathing, heart beat, and blood pressure

pons

above medulla, contains sensory and motor tracts between cortex and medulla

cerebellum

mushrooming out of pons; maintains posture & balance, coordinates body movements

reticular formation

hindbrain to midbrain; network of nerve fibers; arousal, alertness, attention

superior colliculus

receives visual sensory input

inferior colliculus

receives auditory sensory input

thalamus

important relay of sensory information (all except smell); sorts and sends to appropriate areas of cerebral cortex

basal ganglia

movement

hypothalamus

hunger and thirst; emotion "fight or flight"

lateral hypothalamus

hunger center; lesions cause aphagia

ventromedial hypothalamus

satiety center; lesions cause hyperphagia

anterior hypothalamus

electrical stimulation causes aggressive sexual behavior

septum

pleasure center of brain; damage can cause septal rage

amygdala

damage reduces aggression & fear; linked to defense & aggresion; Kluver-Bucy syndrome

hippocampus

learning and memory; lesions produce anterograde amnesia

cerebral cortex

comprised of four lobes - frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal

frontal lobe

contains prefrontal lobes and motor cortex, also Broca's area (produce speech)

prefrontal lobes

association area - combines input from diverse brain regions

projection areas

receive incoming sensory info or send out motor-impulse commands (e.g. visual cortex and motor cortex)

parietal lobe

rear of frontal lobe; contains somatosensory cortex, which sends signals to motor cortex (sensory motor cortex)

occipital lobes

rear of brain, contain visual cortex (striate cortex)

temporal lobes

auditory cortex & Wernike's area (language comprehension)
