Belief that EVERY event, even mental events, have a cause. Denies existence of free will. Human behav. reduced to mechanical events & if we could acquire all past events & facts about someone, we could predict their future acts from laws of nature.
SOFT DETERMINISM
Compatibilism
Determinism is true & free will exists.
View that all phys. events are caused but mental processes are uncaused.Choices have no actual effect in external world. On this view, what we can control isn';t what happens in ext. world but how we think about it.Choices are often restricted...
INDETERMINISM
Denies determinism is true. Also that NOT ALL events, either mental or phys., are determined by past events. It's NOT TRUE that laws of nature & all past events fix all future events.
INCOMPATIBILISM
If determinism is true then free will doesn't exist
View about incosistency of free will & determinism. Not a view of whether free will or determinism exists. An incompatibilist can belief that free will exists even if they don't believe determinism is true.
COMPATIBILISM
Soft determination
View that determiniation is true but free will exists nevertheless. Two critics: hard determinists & incompatibilists.
Libertarianism
View that indeterminism rather than determinism is true, and as a result Free Will exists.
HARD DETERMINISM
Denies existence of free will. Determinism is true & as a result free wil DOESN'T exist. Hard Deters. are icompatibilists who're also determinists.
DETERMINISM
Is the claim that laws of nature and all past events fix all future events.
INDETERMINISM
Not true that laws of nature and all past events fix future events.
HARD DETERMINISM:
Act is caused by God;
God is the only cause;
Totally free human choice gone.
SOFT DETERMINATION:
Act NOT caused by God;
God is primary cause;
Humans are secondary cause;
Humans free choice is compatible with sovereignty.
LIBERTARIANISM
Free from physical determinism and other divorce forms of determinism. Belief that strict determinism and freedom are incompatible. Freedom seems to require indeterminism.
