Experimental Design, intro

An experiment can have two or more experimental conditions, e.g., the experimental condition and the control condition.

E.g: Some participants drink three pints of beer (experimental condition) and some participants drink no beer (control condition). The effect of alcohol can be measure on a memory recall task.

Independent Groups Design

This is when different participants are allocated wither to the experimental condition or the control condition.

Repeated Measure Design

This is when the same participants are used in both conditions of the experiment.

Matched Pairs Design

This is when participants are matched across conditions on important factors relevant to the experiment. e.g, their reading ability, their alcohol consumption. This ensures they are equally matched and both groups are similar.
