Some argue that police-community relations are an important component of the likelihood of crime in the community. One argument is that better police-community relations will reduce the amount of crime in the community, but another argument is that better police relations with teh community will actually increase the crime rate for that community. Explain how it is that better police-community relations can actually increase the amount of crime, or the crime rate, in the community.
when individuals have a good relationship with the police, they are more likely to report crimes that happen to them or crimes they witness because they have a trust in the police. Since most crime rates don’t include a lot of unreported crimes they will rise when more crimes that are generally not reported are reported.
In discussing the underlying assumptions of the Classical Perspective (or the Classical School), what is the “Hedonistic Calculus” and how is it related to our efforts to use punishment to reduce the amount of crime in a society?
The Hedonistic Calculus sees individuals making a choice to commit crime based on weighing the awards against the punishments.
