What is an axis?
An imaginary straight line running through the earth from pole to pole.
What is a core?
The center of a planetary body, such as the earth. There is an Inner Core and an Outer Core. Both cores are made of iron. THE OUTER CORE IS THE ONLY LAYER THAT IS A LIQUID!!! The pressure from all these layers is on top of the core makes the inner core solid. The pressure from everything is pressing down on the Inner Core making it a solid.
What is the crust?
The outermost zone of the solid earth. Makes up only 1% of the earth's mass.
What is a mantle?
The zone of rock below the earth's crust. Comprises nearly 2/3 of earth's mass. 2,870 km thick.
What is the Moho?
The Mohorovicic discontinuity, boundary between the earth's crust and mantle.
What is a seismic wave?
The vibration that travels through the earth?
What is gravity?
The force of attraction between all matter in the universe.
*** ISAAC NEWTON!
What is the law of gravitation?
The principle that the force of attraction between 2 objects depends on the masses and the distance between the objects.
What is the magnetosphere?
A region of space that is affected by the earth's magnetic field.
What is the shadow zone?
The location on the earth's surface where no seismic waves or only P waves can be detected.
What is the equator?
An imaginary line that divides the earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
What is an oblate spheroid?
A slightly flattened sphere.
What is the hydrosphere?
Made up of all the earth's water. The earth is 71% water, 97% of the water is salty, and the remaining 3% is fresh water.
What is the atmosphere?
It is the gases that surround the earth. It provides the air we breath and shields the earth from the sun's harmful radiation. Made up 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen.
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object.
What is oceanic crust?
The crust beneath the oceans.
What is continental crust?
The part of the crust on which the continents rest.
What is the lithosphere?
A rigid layer outer shell of the earth. It is made up of the solid portion of the uppermost part of the mantle and the crust above it.
What is the asthenosphere?
The region of the mantle below the lithosphere.
What is plasticity?
The ability of a solid to flow.
What are P waves?
primary waves, travel through liquids, solids and gases. travel fast
What are S waves?
secondary waves, only travel through solids. travel slow. **** travel only through solids! S waves --- Solids. Slower than p waves.
What is weight?
A measure of the strength of the pull of gravity on an object.
What are Newtons?
The unit that weight is measured in.
