CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS BACTERIA

Streptococcus pyogenes
Disease:Rheumatic fever

Pathogenesis/ Symptoms:
1.antibodies produced against M protien attach to the heart valves
2.immune system attacks the heart valves
3.damage to heart valves develops

-10% of people are carriers
-M protein helps S. pyogenes attach to our cells.
-damage to the heart valves increases the risk of bacterial endocarditis
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS BACTERIA

Staphylococcus aureus
Disease: Endocarditis

Pathogenesis/Symptoms:
Inflammation of the interior lining of the heart leads to tissue damage, including heart valves.
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS BACTERIA

Pasteurella multiocida
Disease: Pasteurellosis

Pathogenesis/ Symptoms:
Local inflammation, swelling, and pain.

-the most common infection following animal bites
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS BACTERIA

Yersinia pestis
Disease: Plague

Pathogenesis/Symptoms:
1.infects lymphnodes, causing swelling (buboes)
2.swelling causes hemorrhage and bruising. (dark buboes int he groin and armpits are typical with the bubonic plague)
3.death caused by septic shock

-Rats are most common reservoir
-Prairie Dogs in Western U.S.
-Fleas are the most common vector
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS BACTERIA

Borrelia burgdorferi
Disease: Lyme disease

Pathogenesis/ Symptoms:
A characteristic "bullseye" rash usually forms followed by flu-like symptoms.

-spirochete
-mouse and deer reservoir.
-tick vector
-the most vector - borne disease in the N. hemisphere, but not common in Arkansas
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS BACTERIA

Rickettsia rickettsii
Disease: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Pathogenesis/ Symptoms:
1.infects cells lining the blood vessels
2.immune response damages blood vessel walls
3.capillaries rupture, causing a measles-like rash.

-transmitted by ticks which are the reservior
-AR, has the highest incidences in the U.S.
-Rickettsia are obligate intracellular parasites.
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS BACTERIA

Bartonella hensellar
Disease: Cat-scratch disease

Pathogenesis/ Symptoms:
Local inflammation and swelling of nearby lymph nodes lasting a few weeks.

-Transmitted to humans by cat bites or scratches.
-50% of cats are carriers.
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS VIRUS

Epstein-Barr Virus
Disease: Infectious mononucleosis

Pathogenesis/ Symptoms:
Usually asymptomatic if infected during childhood. Fever, swollen lymph nodes, and general weakness if infected as an adult.

-HHV-4
-Transmitted by saliva
-Nearly everybody is infected by adulthood.
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS PROTOZOA

Plasmodium vivax
Disease: Malaria

Pathogenesis/ Symptoms:
1.infects red blood cells
2.synchronized release from red blood cells occurs
3.repeating bouts of fever, malaise, and severe headaches follow due to immune response.

-Human reservoir. Mosquito vector.
-400 million cases annually with 3 million deaths worldwide.
CARDIOVASCULAR AND LYMPH SYSTEMS HELMINTHS

Wuchereria bancrofti
Disease: Lymphatic filariasis

Pathogenesis/Symptoms:
1.worms grow in Lymph system
2.growth blocks the lymphatic circulation
3.blockage causes an accumulation of fluids
4.extreme swelling results, usually of the legs

-aka elephantiasis
-transmitted by mosquitoes
->100 million cases worldwide (prevelance)
-rarely fatal
