Macules

Flat spots on the skin such as freckles

Papules- firm raised areas such as the eruptions seen in some stages of chickenpox or syphilis

Vesicles- blisters, or fluid filled sacs, such as those seen in chickenpox

Pustules

Pus-filled sacs such as those seen in acne or pimples

Crusts

Aread of dried pus and blood, commonly called scabs

Wheals- itchy elevated areas with an irregular shape; hives and insect bites; noncontagious; treat w/ benadryl and remove allergens

Ulcer-a deep loss of skin surface that may extend beyond the skin; may cause periodic bleeding and the formation of scars; can be caused by prolonged pressure to the same location

Acne vulgaris- inflammation of the sebaceous glands; cause is unknown but usually occurs during adolescence; symptoms include papules, pustules, and blackheads; treatment includes skin washing, antibiotics, ointments, avoidance of irritants or UV light

Athletes foot- a contagious fungal infection that usually affects the feet; the skin itches, blisters and cracks into open sores; treatment involves applying an antifungal med. and keeping the area clean & dry

Dermatitis

Inflammation of the skin; can be caused by any substance that irritates the skin (frequently an allergic reaction to detergents, cosmetics, pollen, and certain foods); symptoms include dry skin, scaling,erythema, edema, and itching mascular rashes

Treatment for dermatitis

Anti-inflammatory ointments, antihistamines, and/or steroids

Eczema- a noncontagious inflammatory skin disorder caused by an allergent/irritant. Can be caused by diet, cosmetics, soaps, meds., & emotional stress. Symptoms include dry skin, erythema, itching, edema, crusts and scaling. Treatment- removing irritants/ applying corticosteroids

Impetigo- highly contagious skin infection usually caused by bacteria. Symptoms include erythema, oozing, vesicles, pustules, and the formation of yellow crusts. Treatment includes oral and topical antibiotics

Shingles- viral infection that causes painful rash.after you recover from chickenpox the virus enters ur nervous system and lies dormant for years. Can be contsgious to anyone who isnt immune to chickenpox. Treated w antiviral meds and pain control

Psoriasis- chronic noncontagious skin disease with periods of exacerbations and remissions. Cause is unknown, may be hereditary. Can be excacerbated by stress, cold, weather, sunlight, pregnancy, and endocrine changes. Symptoms include thick red areas covered w white/silver scales. Treatment includes coal/tar, cortisone oint. UV light and or scale removal

Ringworm- highly contagious fungal infection of the skin or scalp. Characteristic symptom is the formation of a flat or raused circular area. Oral or topical fungal medication is used as treatment

Verrucae/warts: caused by human papilloma virus (HPV); several diff. forms exist based on their location (genital, plantar, and palmar); a rough, hard, elevated, rounded surface forms on the skin. Some warts may dissapear spontaneously, others may be removed by liquid nitrogen, acid/laser therapy and shave excision
