Skeletal System

supports and protects softer tissues, provides points of attachments for muscles, house blood-producing cells & stores inorganic cells.

Long bones

have long longitudinal axes and expanded ends.

Short bones

are cubelike, w/ roughly equal lengths and widths.

Sesamoid bone

or round bone; is usually small & nobular and embedded in a tendon adjacent to a joint.


EX: kneecap (patella)

Flat bones

are platelike structures w/ broad surfaces.


EX: ribs & scapulae

Irregular bones

have a variety of shapes, most connected to several bones.


EX: facial and backbone

Epiphysis

articulates with another bone; at each end of a long bone.

Articular cartilage

the epiphysis is coated with a layer of hyaline cartilage.

Diaphysis

the shaft of the bone

Metaphysis

is the widening part of the bone between the diaphysis and the epiphysis.

A bone is enclosed by a tough, vascular covering of dense connective tissue

The wall of the diaphysis is mainly composed of tightly packed tissue

Spongy bone or cancellous bone

the epiphyses are largely composed of thin layers of compact bone on their surfaces.


Trabeculae

spongy bone consists of many branching bony plates
