What is the disadvantage of a parallel testing configuration, such as that in theSMAC II analyzer?
Parallel testing performs a measurement of every analyte on every sample in the batch. If a clinician only wants a glucose measurement on his patient, he
would get an entire seven-test panel, for example.
What is the major task in the pre-analytical stage of testing?
This is sample or specimen processing.
What step in specimen handling has been eliminated by the serum separator tube?
The double spin technique has been eliminated. Prior to the development of the serum separator tube, plain red top tubes had to be spun twice to fully
remove the clot and free the serum. This technique required decapping the container and risking exposure to blood either directly or via aerosol.
Define carry-over
Carry-over is the contamination of one sample by the previous sample. For example, if sample 33 has a glucose concentration of 500 mg/dL, then carryover
would result in sample 34 testing as perhaps 150 mg/dL instead of a correct 90 mg/dL.
Distinguish between an open and a closed reagent system.
An open reagent system allows the laboratory to use reagents other than those made by the instrument manufacturer. It might be cheaper to use reagents
from Company A on Analyzer X, and an ·open system will permit that. A
closed reagent system only allows the use of reagents made by the instrument
manufacturer. This system is restrictive, and may be costly to the laboratory. An analogy is when you attend a sporting event at a stadium where you cannot
bring food into the venue. You can only buy refreshments from the concession stands. You can eat, all right, but you pay $4.75 for a hot dog.
State the main drawback or challenges of total aboratory automation (TIA).
TLA requires a considerable financial investment and increased floor space. Skilled technical personnel are needed to operate and troubleshoot the system. The laboratory infrastructure must be remodeled and personnel teams developed, and software must be interfaced with other laboratory or hospital
systems. Some TlA systems do not allow for the processing of stat samples.
