What two cells is the nervous system made up of? |
Glial cells (used for support and metabolism) & (helps hold neurons close together)
Neurons (conducting) & (carries the nerve)
|
1- think "Glue" 2- similar to Jimmy NEUtron |
|
What is a neuron |
Individual units that make up the nervous system |
|
|
List 8 parts of a neuron & what they do |
- dendrite - receives info from receptors ; TO the cell body
- Axon - extension of cell body, carries info AWAY from cell body to the next neuron effector
- cell body - contains nucleus
-myelin sheath - fatty protein used for insulation; speeds up transmission. *white matter
-Schwann cells (glial) - Forms myelin sheath
-Nodes of Ranvier - gap between Schwann cells. Nerve impulses jump from one Node to the next (saltatory conduction)
-Neurilemma- Promotes the regeneration of damaged Neurons- healing mostly in the PNS
- Nerve ending - Has synaptic vesicles containing neurotransmitters; distributes and sends the impulse to the post synaptic membrane |

|
List 2 ways that can INCREASE the speed of nerve transmission |
1-BIGGER AXON DIAMETER 2- MYELIN SHEATH AROUND AXON |
|
|
What is the purpose of the myelin sheath? |
Myelin sheath insulates to prevent the loss of charged ions from the axon which increases speed of transmission |
Think "Fast" |
|
What is the difference between White matter & Grey matter? |
White matter = myelin & Neurilemma ; regenerates
Grey matter= no myelin or Neurilemma Ex: Spinal cord injuries |
|
|
What is Multiple Sclerosis? |
The body's own immune system breaks down the myelin sheath on the neuron Due to destruction of the myelin sheath = inefficient nerve transmission |
M for Myelin |
|
What are 3 types of Neurons? |
1- Sensory neuron (IN) 2- Motor neuron - multipolar 3- Interneuron (OUT) - bipolar- two directions
* Sensory & motor Neurons have a myelin sheath, but Interneurons are shorter and do not have a myelin sheath |
|
|
Reflex Arc |
- Affector - senses stimulus & nerve impulse
-Sensory Neurons - carry impulse TO spinal cord
-Interneuron - Carries impulse to motor Neuron (co-ordination & interpretation )
-Motor Neurons - carry impulse FROM spinal cord
-Effector - Muscle or gland that responds |
