The tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.

What does adaptation mean in a biological sense?

A trait with a current functional role in the life of an organism that is maintained and evolved by means of natural selection.

What are major life heirarchies?

Species, Genus, Family, Order, Class, Phylum, Kingdom, and Domain.

What are emergent properties?

Biological matter can be organized into levels of increasing complexity. Many different kinds of macromolecules are used to build cells, which in turn can be organized into tissues.

What does it mean when biologist say an genetic code is "universal"?

The universal genetic code is a common language for almost all organisms to translate nucleotide sequences of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) to amino acid sequences of proteins.

What is Darwin's ideas of natural selection?

1. More individuals are produced each generation that can survive.

What is the difference between a good hypothesis and a bad one?

What is the difference between accuaracy and precision?

Accuarcy is how close the measurement is to the actual value.




Precision is how close the measurements are to each other.

What are the major types of variables in an experiement?

Dependent variable - a variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another.




Independent variable - a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another.




Controlled variable - the one element that is not changed throughout an experiment

What is pseudoscience?

A collection of beliefs, theories, or practices that have been or are considered scientific, but have no basis in scientific fact.

How do you convert from metric unit to the other.

Multiply or divide the original unit by 10's depending on where the metric chart is.

What is scientific notation?

The way that scientists easily handle very large numbers or very small numbers.




For example, instead of writing 0.0000000056, we write 5.6 x 10-9.

What is the differnece between a line chart, bar chart, and a pie chart?

Line graphs compare two variables. Each variable is plotted along an axis . A line graph has a vertical axis and a horizontal axis.




A diagram in which the numerical values of variables are represented by the height or length of lines or rectangles of equal width.




A specialized graph used in statistics in which the relative proportions of parts of a whole are shown as different size wedges of a pie shape

What is each chart used for?

Line graphs can also be used to compare changes over the same period of time for more than one group.




Pie charts are best to use when you are trying to compare parts of a whole. They do not show changes over time.




Bar graphs are used to compare things between different groups or to track changes over time.

What are coordinate pairs on a graph?

The horizontal axis, called the x-axis, represents values of x , and the vertical axis, called the y-axis, represents values of y .

Which coordinate is the independent variable and which is the dependent variable?

x - axis is considered the dependent variable, and y - axis is the independent variable.
